Instagram Motion Template

Instagram Motion Template

Instagram Stories won't last forever, but a standout template will make sure they're not long-forgotten. Whether it's to promote your brand, a client's, or simply to jazz up your own feed, one 10/10 template is all you need for many memorable Stories to come. Illustrator Jessica Jansen (@layeringcontrast) will show you how in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Tip: If you need inspiration for a dreamy colour palette, head to colour.adobe.com or Pinterest.

Click New Project in the start screen, naming it before you click OK. Then create a sequence by selecting the New Item icon in the Project panel followed by Sequence. Use the DSLR 108p25 presets. Click on Settings and change your frame size to '1080 x 1920', which is perfect for Instagram Stories.

Import a picture of your colour palette and any illustrations you'd like to use by going to File > Import (you can use the assets Jessica has provided in the asset downloads). Drag this from your Project panel to your Timeline.

Go to Graphics > New Layer > Rectangle to create your background colour. Head to the Effect Controls in the Project panel and then Scale – scale it up to fill the entire frame. Drag your colour palette above it in your Timeline, then click back onto the rectangle layer. Under Shape you'll find the Fill option, and next to that is the Eyedropper tool – use this to select a background colour from your palette.

Pull your illustrations into your Timeline and stack them above the background layer. Now the real fun begins. Click on the illustration you'd like to work with and have a go at making it appear in frame. First, change the Opacity to '0%' and hit enter – this will become the first frame of your animation. Then drag the Playhead across 10 frames (or wherever you want the illustration to appear) and change the Opacity back to '100%'.

Another trick is to make illustrations come in from the sides, top or bottom. Simply select the layer, go to Motion in the Effect Controls, then Position, and click the Toggle Animation. Move your illustration to its starting point by adjusting the values (for example, out of frame on the right-hand side). Then use the Playhead to decide when you want it to appear. Again, readjust the values to get it into your desired position. Repeat with all other illustrations.

To add text to your template, go to Graphics > New Layer > Text and under Text in Effect Controls, you can centre it, resize it and choose your font. Type your desired text straight into the design.

Make adjustments in the Effect Controls panel. You can be as creative as you like – Jessica shows you how to add more movement to your illustrations in the video above. Happy? Hit Export. You can save it as a template and edit it for future Instagram Stories with new words, pictures, colours, video clips – or anything your creativity fancies.
